Why use reverse osmosis water purifiers?

How do commercial and industrial water soften systems work?

Hard water is pass through ion exchange resin beads and exchange under the appropriate pressure. In modern water softeners, the resin consists of millions of tiny plastic particles, each of which is negatively charge with ion exchange resin. The ions used in this process (calcium, magnesium and sodium) are positively charge ions.

When the resin is in a ground state, the negatively charge resin beads trap the positively charge sodium ions. When calcium and magnesium come into contact with the resin core in the resin bath, the sodium ions are repell from the exchanger resin.


Eventually, the entire exchange space in the resin is occupied by calcium and magnesium and there is no more plasticizer to exchange. As a result, the resin wears out and must be replace.

The laminating resin is regenerate in seawater. During regeneration, the flow of process water for the plasticizer is block.

Brine is create by mixing salt and water in a salt tank. The brine flows through the resin and comes into contact with the resin beads containing calcium and magnesium ions. Calcium and magnesium have a stronger charge than sodium, but the concentrated brine contains billions of weakly charged sodium ions.

As a result, sodium ions replace the fewer calcium and magnesium ions. When the calcium and magnesium ions are exchange, the positively charge sodium ions are attract to the negatively charge exchange sites on the resin.

Eventually, all the exchange sites are occupied by sodium ions. The resin is regenerated and can be prepared for the next annealing cycle.
