Koyna Dam
Koyna Dam is a dam built on Koyna River in Satara district of Maharashtra. It is the second largest dam in India and also one of the largest earthen dams in the world. It was built by British engineer Sir M Visvesvaraya and was inaugurated by him in 1948, making him an important figure during India’s Independence Movement as well as during its first decades after independence.
The dam spans over 50 km length with an average height difference across its entire length ranging from 10 m to 30 m (33 ft). The reservoir created behind this barrage has been used for irrigation purposes since 1952 when water from river Koyna started flowing into it through two tunnels (one at each end) connecting them with underground pipe lines which carry water from upstream villages all around Satara district before reaching their destination point at Rewari town where it is distributed among farmers’ fields via canals or pipes laid on ground level along canal banks so that they don’t have to use high-pressure pumps anymore!
