Understanding Photonics and Applications

The advent of the laser created an explosion in photonics applications that have been responsible for the creation of numerous products and systems including, bar-code readers, fiber communication, medical diagnostic tools, sensors of physical and chemical phenomena, data storage and processing, molecular tweezers, and many more.

The objective of this course is to provide a good understanding of the field of photonics, starting from the properties of photons or light, i.e. the nature of photons, how they propagate in various materials, how they diffract, how they interfere, how they interact with matter, and how they can be manipulated and detected. The presentations will use simple language and the emphasis will be on the understanding, in real time, of the various concepts being presented. Basics of the sources of photons, such as lasers and other light sources, can also be added as an option. Numerous demonstrations will be shown to enhance the understanding of the material being presented.

The course is suitable for engineers, scientists, educators, managers, medical personnel, architects, and others who are interested in understanding the basics of photonics and its future without a reliance on a mathematically-based treatment.

The length of the course can vary from one day to five days, depending on the interests, needs and background of the participants.
