Understanding Fiberoptics and Applications
Fiberoptics today plays a very important role in communication, sensors, lighting, medical diagnostics, imaging and in the transfer of optical/microwave power. Optical fibers have very low loss, can carry a huge amount of information, are immune to electromagnetic interference, and are safe to use in hazardous environments because they are non-electric. The advent of the laser is very much responsible for many of the applications.

The objective of this course is to provide the participants with a good understanding, in real time, of the fundamentals of optical fibers without the need for a strong technical background. Both single mode and multimode fibers will be covered, as well as, lightpipes, graded-index fibers, thin-film waveguides, and photonic crystal fibers. The use of optical fibers and waveguides to create various optical components such as polarizers, beam splitters, fast switches and modulators will be included.
Laboratory demonstrations will be used to enhance the understanding of the material being presented.
The length of the course can vary from half-a-day for fiber basics only, to three days, depending on the applications of interest to the participants.
