Basics of Optical Gyroscopes and Applications
The advent of the laser has revolutionized the field of sensors, in particular, the sensing of absolute rotation, which for a long time relied on the precession of a spinning wheel, i.e. mechanical gyroscopes. For a number of years, optical "gyroscopes" have been replacing mechanical gyroscopes in conventional inertial navigation systems for aircrafts and space vehicles. Other areas of applications include, ships, submarines, smart weapons, deep-sea diving, guiding of drill bits in oil exploration, and so on.

The objective of this course is to provide the participants with a clear understanding, in real time, of how ring laser gyros and fiberoptic gyros work, what the error sources are and how they can be reduced, what the fundamental limits are, and how to create the critical optical, electro-optical, and electronic components for achieving a performance close to the fundamental limit. Future concepts will also be explored.
The course is suitable for engineers, scientists and managers, who are interested in understanding and mastering the fundamentals of optical gyroscopes without a reliance on a mathematically-based treatment.
The length of the course can vary from one day to three days, depending on the interests, needs and background of the participants.
