Basics of Laser Spectroscopic Methods and Applications

The advent of the laser has revolutionized the field of spectroscopy. It not only simplified and improved existing methods but has also created new kinds of spectroscopic techniques that have found numerous applications in both science and engineering.

The objective of this course is to provide the participants with a clear understanding of the concepts behind the various spectroscopic techniques created by the laser, without the need for a background in atomic, molecular and solid-state physics. The techniques covered will include: basic absorption and fluorescence; saturated absorption, dispersion and polarization; two-step and multi-step interactions; stimulated Raman (SRS) and Brillouin (SBS) scattering; coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS); quantum beat; photon echo; opto-acoustic and opto-galvanic; and more. Methods of ultra-high resolution and precision will also be included. Demonstrations will be used to enhance the understanding of the material being presented.

The course is suitable for scientists, engineers, managers and others who are either working in the field and want a better understanding, or are curious about what laser spectroscopy can do for them.

The length of the course can vary from one day to three days, depending on the interests, needs and background of the participants.
